What Link Indexing Is | How a Link Shows Up in Google and in Search Engine Bots
For Google, the whole process starts with crawling: the bots, called googlebots, crawl the web for pages. Google has different bots for mobile, desktop, video, images and news.
After crawling, the pages are rendered and finally, if the content is suitable for Google, they are added to the index. The process is not as simple as it looks…
When new content links to content that is already published, it gets indexed faster. That is why orphan pages are so hard to get into the index.

Google Runs Two Separate Indexes, Primary and Secondary: the Desktop Index and the Mobile Index
In 2016, Google announced that the primary index had changed from desktop to mobile. The move was made to reflect the trend that most searches are now done on phones, and you can check it yourself by looking at your website’s Google analytics.
The result of this change is that mobile search results are slightly different from desktop search results.
It also means that mobile search results pick up changes on your website faster.
Indexing is the process in which Google extracts the most relevant information and adds it to the list. When you run a search, Google shows the best information based on that index. The list is like a library in which billions of web pages are stored and organized. In fact, the size of Google’s index is not as big as we think… Many pages on the internet are spam or carry no useful information, so Google’s goal is to have the best possible index, not the largest one.
It has recently been confirmed that Google does not crawl all the content of a website, and so it indexes only a limited number of pages (https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-not-indexing-site/416717/)
This information about indexing now appears in your Google Search Console as pages that have been discovered but not indexed. The content can be crawled and indexed later, or not…
Google Search Console | Looking for Indexing Problems
Google Search Console is a powerful tool for checking whether you currently have an indexing problem on your website. On the left you will see the Index–> Coverage section.
The pages Google has not put into the index are presented in different categories:
Redirect error
Excluded by “noindex” tag
Crawled – currently not indexed
Redirected page
Alternate page with proper canonical tag
Not found (404)
Discovered – currently not indexed
Soft 404
Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user
Duplicate, URL submitted as canonical not selected
Can My Backlinks Be Indexed?
The first thing you have to check is whether the robots.txt file lets the bots visit the page. If the robots are blocked from crawling pages by a Disallow directive, Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test displays the message below. Once a page is blocked, it can be neither crawled nor fetched by the robots.

Once you are sure a page is crawlable, check that it does not carry a noindex tag.
The noindex tag keeps the page out of Google’s search results.
As you can see in the screenshot below, a page that is not in the index can still be crawled and fetched by the Googlebot smartphone.

How to Get Backlinks Indexed | What Are Indexers?
Link indexing is something that became harder for SEO agencies and freelancers in 2021 and 2022. Threads of complaints about low success rates can be found in the SEO forums. What used to take a few days to get indexed now takes weeks. We experienced our first problems with link indexing in February 2020, and the years 2021 and 2022 did not improve it.
To raise the indexing rate, some people have developed indexers. Indexers are platforms built by a third party to force the indexing process. A few of them are free and, as you would expect, they have a low success rate. In 2022, you can find more than 10 paid indexing services on the market, each with different indexing rates.
Indexers usually offer monthly packages for indexing thousands of links, but if you only have to index a small number of links over a few months, they can also work with a more flexible credit system. Sending a link to an indexer costs between 0.01 and 0.02 dollars.
What Link Indexing Is | DEINDEXING
A link that is indexed is not indexed forever. In a few cases we noticed that links were deindexed by Google.
A few reasons can come to mind to explain it: either the links were not well connected to each other, or Google eventually decided that those links were not relevant and not worth being in the index.
It is also possible that the hosting platform where the backlinks sit decides to add noindex tags. That was the case with the Medium publishing platform, which began enforcing the noindex tag in the first half of 2021.
Do Backlinks Have to Be Indexed to Attract Traffic?
Crawling and indexing web pages matters a great deal, because only then can they appear in search results and start receiving organic traffic and conversions.
For parasite SEO, indexing is a key stage because the goal is to have your parasite shown in the SERP.
For backlinks, is indexing as important as it is for web pages and parasites?
As we said earlier, backlinks matter in SEO. One of the topics debated in SEO forums and groups is whether do-follow backlinks have to be crawled or fully indexed in order to count for SEO, for example to pass link authority.
Many think backlinks must be fully indexed to pass authority to the money site. A minority seem to think that the robots receiving the backlink is enough.
In the end, some believe that links crawled by the robots do count for SEO, but not as much as links that are fully indexed.
How Can I Check Whether My Pages or Links Are Indexed?
If you do not want to wait for your links to appear in Google Search Console, in Semrush or in the Ahrefs dashboard, you can check the links one by one by running one of these three searches in Google:
http://www.link1.com (leads to broader results)
inurl:http://www.link1.com
site: http://www.link1.com
This technique is not always accurate, because sometimes a link does not show up in a Google search but does show in Ahrefs or Semrush.
When you want to check the backlinks of your money site or of another page, you will notice differences between Semrush and Ahrefs, so it is good to use both.

How Fast Can My New Content or Links Be Indexed?
Web pages can take a few hours, a few days or even a few weeks to be indexed. If your website is Google News approved, your content is approved very quickly. To speed up the indexing process you can ask the robots to visit your pages through Google Search Console, but the results are not guaranteed.
As mentioned earlier, indexing backlinks is harder than indexing your own web pages, and SEO indexers are widely used for this purpose. We found that Google’s indexing problems are tied to Google updates. SemRush has a useful tool called the Semrush Sensor, which measures SERP volatility and is therefore a sign of Google updates, even unannounced ones. If volatility is high, indexing is probably difficult, so it is better to wait for the volatility index to come down before sending links to your preferred indexer.
