These days many site owners, online stores, companies and even webmasters share one question: why, when somebody asks an AI about our line of work, does our site not come up? Why do ChatGPT, Google AI, Bing Copilot or Perplexity name our competitor but not us?
If that question is yours too, the first thing you need to know is this: being visible in AI answers is not the same as taking a traditional ranking in Google. Classic SEO is not the whole story here. What matters now is a combination of SEO, brand credibility, a correct technical structure, useful content and a site a machine can read at the same time.
I am Omid Bodagh, an SEO, website design and digital marketing specialist. In this article I want to explain, as plainly and as practically as I can, why your site does not show up in AI, what the difference is between SEO for Google and visibility in AI, and what you should do to raise your chances of being seen.
First of all: what does showing up in AI actually mean?
When we say your site does not show up in AI, we usually mean one of these situations:
- When a user asks a question in Google AI or an AI Overview, your site is not seen as a source or a suggestion
- When a topic or a brand is searched in ChatGPT or similar tools, your site’s name does not appear in the answers
- When a user asks the AI which are the best companies, the best tools or the best sites in a field, and your competitors are introduced while you are not
- When your site is not treated as a recognized source even for direct, specialist questions in your own field
So this is not only about having no ranking in Google. Your site may hold an average position in Google and still be absent from AI answers altogether. The reverse is possible too: some sites have a better chance in AI answers because of high credibility, a good content structure and strong brand signals.
Is there a button that puts a site into AI?
No. Let me say this very clearly: There is no magic button that gets a site into AI answers.
There is no special plugin that, once installed, immediately puts your site into ChatGPT, and no hidden trick that makes Google AI recommend you forever. Anyone who promises that has either oversimplified the subject or is running an unrealistic advertisement.
Visibility in AI is the result of a set of factors:
- that your site is crawlable and understandable in the first place
- that your content is genuinely answer-driven and useful
- that you are recognized on the web as a credible source
- that you are healthy technically and in SEO terms
- that your brand is also visible in other sources
What is the difference between classic SEO and visibility in AI?
In classic SEO the goal was to rank for a keyword in Google’s search results and have the user click your link. In AI answers the user may never enter your site at all. The AI summarizes the answer, sees a more limited set of sources and sometimes picks only a few names or a few sites.
So it is no longer enough just to rank. You also have to make these answer-driven systems understand you as a source they can rely on. That is why terms like these keep coming up:
- AEO or Answer Engine Optimization
- GEO or Generative Engine Optimization
- LLMO or optimization for language models
Whatever the name, the principle is one thing: your site must be useful to a human and readable by a machine.
The main reasons your site does not show up in AI answers
1) Your site is not indexed enough
This is the simplest reason and at the same time one of the most common. If the important pages of your site are not properly indexed in Google or in other search engines, it is natural that your chance of being in AI answers falls too.
Many sites carry problems like these:
- Pages are set to noindex
- Important paths are blocked in robots.txt
- The sitemap has not been submitted correctly
- Pages are orphaned and have no proper internal links
- Pages exist technically but are practically impossible to discover
Example: Suppose you have published 50 specialist articles about website design, SEO or industrial services, but only 12 of them are in Google’s index. In that situation, do not expect AI to rely on your content as a whole.
2) Your site is not fit for crawling and reading
Many sites look fine from the outside but have problems for bots and crawling systems. For example:
- The main part of the content loads through heavy JavaScript
- The server is slow or returns timeouts
- The site keeps throwing 5xx or 403 errors
- A firewall or CDN is blocking some bots
- The mobile version or the final rendered page is incomplete
If crawlers cannot see the page properly, it becomes hard for AI to understand the content. You may have written an excellent page, but if the search engine or the systems around it cannot read it correctly, then for them that page simply does not exist.
3) Your content was not written to answer questions
One of the important differences between content that works for AI and ordinary content is an answer-first approach to the question the user actually asked. Plenty of sites have content, but that content is no use for answering a question directly.
Say the user asks: Why is my site not showing up in ChatGPT? while the article you wrote only talks about the history of AI or a general definition of SEO, and gives no clear answer to the question.
Content with a better chance of being seen in AI usually has these traits:
- It states the question clearly
- It gives a short, plain answer right at the start
- Then it goes into deeper explanation
- It uses clear headings and an orderly structure
- It has examples, a comparison and a wrap-up
So if your content is still written only to fill a keyword, you should not expect much from AI visibility.
4) Your site does not have enough topical authority
AI usually does not like to use sites that have no depth in a field. If you have one article about SEO, one about cooking, one about cryptocurrency and one about air-conditioner repair, you are not a topical reference.
To have a better chance in AI answers, you need to build Topic Authority in one or more specific subjects.
Example: If your business is website design and SEO, you should publish content steadily across these subjects:
- On-page SEO
- Technical SEO
- Corporate website design
- Online store design
- Content production
- Site speed
- Server and hosting
- Digital branding
When you have several strong, related pieces of content and they link to each other, both Google and AI-based systems understand that you have something to say in this field.
5) Your brand is unknown to the web
One of the most important reasons a site is not seen in AI is weak brand signals outside the site itself.
AI looks for a source it can trust. If your brand name is only visible inside your own site and no other source mentions it, trust becomes harder to earn.
Brand signals include things like:
- The brand name being mentioned on other websites
- Professional profiles on reputable networks
- A complete and genuine About page
- Clear contact information
- A named author for the articles
- Customer reviews and case studies
- Brand searches in Google
Example: Suppose two companies both provide SEO services. The first one has only a website. The second, besides its site, has an active LinkedIn profile, its brand named in several media outlets, clear case studies and its manager introduced publicly. Naturally, the second one looks more trustworthy to AI.
6) Your content does not show real experience and expertise
Today, having text is not enough. Your content has to show that it comes from real experience, expertise and practical understanding. If your article looks like a rewrite of ten other articles, why should an AI pick you as a source?
Strong content for AI usually has these traits:
- It is written from real project experience
- It has practical examples
- It carries a personal, expert point of view
- It is not simply translation or a shallow rewrite
- It is up to date
Weak example: SEO means optimizing a site for search engines, and it increases your ranking.
Better example: On one SEO project, correcting only the internal linking structure and updating 12 old articles grew the site’s organic click-through rate by 38 percent in less than 2 months. That kind of content shows real experience.
7) Your content structure is not understandable by machines
A lot of content is not bad for a human reader but is messy in structure. AI and search engines like structure. That means:
- A clear main title
- Clear subheadings
- Clean paragraphing
- Lists and tables
- Question and answer
- An obvious conclusion
If your article is one long wall of text, it is hard for the user to understand, and the same is true for the machine.
That is why pages such as FAQ, step-by-step guides, comparisons and well-structured articles usually have a better chance of being extracted into AI answers.
8) You have not used structured data enough
Schema, or Structured Data, is not a miracle, but it helps search engines understand better what each page is about. If your site marks up its articles, services, products, FAQs, authors, organization and breadcrumbs with correct structured data, the topic becomes easier for systems to grasp.
These schema types are usually the useful ones:
- Article
- Organization
- Person
- FAQPage
- BreadcrumbList
- LocalBusiness
- Product
- Service
I want to stress this again: schema alone does not put you into AI answers, but when the content and the SEO are good, it is a valuable piece of technical help.
9) Your site lacks enough credible backlinks and mentions
AI usually takes more seriously the sources that have already earned credibility on the web. One sign of that credibility is natural backlinks and mentions.
If no reputable site has pointed at you, no outlet has named you and there is no meaningful link to your content, it is natural that you have fewer chances than your competitors.
I do not mean you should go and buy bulk, low-quality backlinks. In fact, that sometimes backfires. A good backlink is one that:
- Is relevant to your field of work
- Comes from real and reputable sites
- Is natural and logical
- Is built alongside genuinely valuable content
10) Your content is old, thin or repetitive
Many sites have a lot of content, but most of it is either old, shallow or the same as the rest. That kind of content is not attractive to AI.
If you have written 20 articles that all repeat roughly one thing in different words, instead of raising your credibility you may fall into content overlap between your own pages. In that state the search engine, and even the AI systems, do not know which of your pages is the main reference for the topic.
Ten deep, current and practical articles are better than 50 weak ones.
11) Your site was written for Google, not for people
This problem is still common on many Persian-language sites: texts stuffed with keywords, with no human voice, no clear answer, written only to rank.
But now both Google and the AI systems pay more attention than before to helpful content as a signal. If the user finishes your text and feels they got their answer, that is a real positive signal. If they feel the text was written only for SEO, the chance of it being valued goes down.
12) Your expectations of AI are not realistic
This point is very important. Even if you do everything correctly, there is still no guarantee that AI will bring up your name in every answer. Why? Because:
- AI usually selects only a small number of sources
- The type of question the user asks matters a great deal
- Some answers are built without any direct reference to a specific source
- Competition in some fields is extremely heavy
So your goal should not be to appear in every single question. Your goal should be to raise the chance of being seen through sound, fundamentals-first work.
One important note for Iranian sites: do not underestimate international internet shutdowns
As I promised, here is a short but important reference to the situation in Iran. Among the issues that sometimes affect, indirectly, how Iranian sites are seen in international systems, disruption or shutdown of international internet access is easy to overlook.
If at certain times foreign access to your site becomes unstable, or your server and CDN do not respond well from outside Iran, some crawlers or foreign services may fail to receive the site’s content properly. This is not always the main reason, but in some projects it has genuinely had an effect.
In plain language: if your site is slow, blocked or unstable for a foreign user, a foreign bot or an international service, its chances of being seen in some AI systems fall as well. That is why uptime, hosting quality, CDN configuration and the site’s international accessibility are important for Iranian businesses.
What should you do to get seen in AI?
Now the practical part of the subject. If you want a better chance of your site appearing in AI answers, take these steps seriously and in this order:
1) Fix the technical foundation of the site
- Review Search Console
- Make sure the important pages are indexed
- Check robots.txt and noindex
- Improve site speed
- Clear the 404s, the 5xx errors and the broken redirects
- Strengthen the internal links pointing at your important pages
- Take mobile friendliness seriously
If the technical base has problems, however much good content you produce, you will not get the full return from it.
2) Write content that is question-driven and answer-driven
Instead of articles that only circle the topic, write content that answers the user’s real question.
A good structure for that content:
- A short statement of the problem
- A quick answer in 2 or 3 sentences
- The main reasons
- A real example
- A practical fix
- A closing summary
That structure is good for the user, good for search engines and good for AI systems.
3) Build topical authority, not single stand-alone articles
If you work in one field, you need a set of related content, not one article. If your subject is website design, a single article about website design is not enough. You have to build a content cluster:
- What is corporate website design
- What are the stages of online store design
- The difference between WordPress and custom development
- How the cost of website design is calculated
- The role of SEO in website design
- Common mistakes in website design
This shows search engines and AI that you have depth in the subject.
4) Bring real experience into the content
If you have executed a project, write about what happened in it. If you ran into an error, explain how you solved it. If you have a case study, publish it with its details.
Real, experience-based content has several advantages:
- It becomes unique
- It builds trust
- It does not look like competitors’ repeated content
- It has a higher chance of earning mentions and links
5) Take the About, Contact and author pages seriously
Some people treat these pages as secondary, but for trust-building they matter a great deal. A site with no identity is taken less seriously. Make it clear:
- Who you are
- What your expertise is
- What background you have
- How someone can contact you
- Who wrote or reviewed the article
This matters even more in specialist, service, medical, financial and educational fields.
6) Strengthen the brand outside your site as well
You cannot only be good inside your own site; the web has to know you. For that:
- Earn mentions in reputable media
- Publish real, high-quality advertorials
- Keep a presence on professional profiles
- Introduce your case studies and projects where they are relevant
- Publish customer reviews
The more real and traceable your brand is on the web, the better your chances with intelligent tools.
7) Implement structured data properly
If you have articles, services, an organization, FAQs and authors, add the matching schema. But remember that schema has to describe what is really there, not decorate the page. If you mark up an FAQ, it should contain genuinely useful questions and answers.
8) Update your old content
One of the simplest and most effective moves is rewriting or updating old articles. Sometimes an old article, once its structure is corrected, examples are added, its information is refreshed and its headings are optimized, comes back to life and starts bringing traffic in again.
9) Use credible sources and citations
When your content refers to standards, statistics or credible sources, the credibility of the text rises. Do not overdo it, though. The goal is not to make the article look like a thesis; the goal is to keep your content from having no backing.
10) Do not forget the English version where you need one
If your audience is not only inside Iran, or you work in a field where international competition and visibility matter to you, a high-quality English version can help. Not for everyone, but for some brands it genuinely works.
That does not mean ignoring Persian. For the Iranian market, good Persian content is still the main foundation of success.
Tools that are useful for checking your AI visibility
A direct tool that tells you exactly how many times your site has appeared in ChatGPT is not always available, but to check your situation you can use these:
- Google Search Console: for index, clicks, impressions and technical health
- Google Analytics: for traffic changes and user behavior
- Bing Webmaster Tools: because some answer-driven systems also use the Bing ecosystem
- PageSpeed Insights: for speed and Core Web Vitals
- Ahrefs or Semrush: for content, competitors, backlinks and brand-mention analysis
- Rich Results Test and Schema Validator: for checking that the structured data is valid
I will stress this again: these tools are only for research, analysis and monitoring and nothing else. None of them will do the work that makes you grow in AI automatically. Deciding, executing, producing content and building the brand are still your job.
Quick checklist: why is my site not visible in AI?
If I want to compress the whole article into a short checklist, run through these items:
- Are my important pages indexed?
- Is the site stable and reachable from outside Iran and for crawlers?
- Does my content answer the user’s question directly?
- Do I have depth and credibility in one specific subject?
- Is my brand known outside my own site?
- Are the About page, the author page and the Contact page complete?
- Does my content show real experience and practical examples?
- Have I implemented structured data properly?
- Have I updated the old and weak content?
- Am I writing only for Google, or am I genuinely useful for people too?
Wrap-up
If your site does not show up in AI answers, the problem is usually not one single thing. It is a combination of technical SEO, content quality, brand credibility, correct information structure and stable reachability of the site all at once.
In plain language, AI usually goes to sites that:
- Are crawlable and understandable
- Have useful, answer-driven content
- Are credible in one specific field
- Have a real and trustworthy footprint on the web
- Are in good shape technically and in user experience
So if your site is not showing up in ChatGPT or Google AI today, do not lose hope. This is not solved by a few surface changes, but with a correct strategy it is completely improvable.
