If you are thinking about launching a news site, you probably have a dozen questions running. Does an online publication actually make money? How much can you realistically take from advertorials and banner sales? What makes news website design different from designing a normal business site? How do you rank in every city and province? And dozens more like them.
I am Omid Bodagh, an SEO, web design and digital marketing specialist. Across my working years I have handled all kinds of news sites, and I know this field carries both big opportunities and hard problems. A publication that is designed properly, managed with discipline and given a clear content and revenue strategy can become a real, durable business.
In this article I will walk through the whole thing: news website design, the revenue models, advertorials, banner sales, SEO for a newsroom, and how a site ranks city by city and province by province across Iran. Practical, and from experience.
What is a news site, and how does it differ from other websites?
A news site is an online publication that keeps publishing news, articles, reports and editorial pieces on a rolling basis. The differences from a corporate, store or service website come down to a handful of things:
- Content volume: a newsroom puts out several stories every day, and that output has nothing in common with an ordinary site
- Publishing speed: a story has to go out fast, because a late publish is traffic you will never get back
- A different technical structure: a stronger server, a more complex category architecture, a faster CMS and its own set of technical optimizations
- A different revenue model: money comes from advertorials, display banners, business partnerships and pay-per-click ads, not from selling a product directly
- The need for a content team: without an active production desk behind it, the site cannot grow
Does a news site really make money?
The short answer: Yes. But not as easily as a lot of people imagine.
A publication with healthy traffic that shows up for the searches that matter can run several revenue models, and every one of them is worth taking seriously. Let us look at each in detail.
1) Income from advertorials
The advertorial is one of the main and highest-earning models for Iranian news sites. It is a promotional or introductory article published on your own site, and it normally carries a link to the client’s website as well.
Why do businesses buy advertorials?
- For backlinks that strengthen their own search presence
- For branding and visibility in the media
- To introduce a new product or service
- For crisis management and repairing a brand image
How much money is in them?
The price of one depends on a few factors:
- Site traffic: the more traffic, the higher the price
- Domain authority: the higher the DA or DR, the more valuable the placement
- Specialization: niche outlets usually sell advertorials at higher prices
- Link permanence: a permanent placement costs more than a temporary one
Say a publication has a mid-range DA, somewhere between 30 and 50, and decent traffic. It typically sells each advertorial for between 500,000 and 5,000,000 Toman. Stronger, more established sites run placements from 5 to 30 million Toman and higher still.
Now assume you sell 20 of them in a month at an average of 2 million Toman. That is 40 million Toman of monthly income from this model alone. Getting to that line takes time, work and consistency.
2) Income from selling banner space
Display banners are the other classic model. You reserve fixed spaces on the site for ad creative and rent them out to businesses.
The banner formats:
- Header banner: top of the site, the most exposure and the highest price
- Sidebar banner: the side column, well suited to always-on campaigns
- In-content banner: placed between stories and articles, it gets a good click rate
- Footer banner: the bottom of the page, the cheapest option
- Pop-up banner: an overlay window with a high view rate, though it can irritate the reader
What does banner space earn?
Banner pricing is normally monthly and depends on:
- where the unit sits on the site
- daily traffic
- the audience niche
- the length of the contract
A publication drawing 10 to 50 thousand views a day can rent a single banner slot for anywhere between 1 and 10 million Toman a month. Own five slots at 3 million Toman each and that is 15 million Toman a month from banners alone.
3) Income from pay-per-click and display advertising
With high traffic you can plug into Iranian ad networks. They serve ads onto your pages automatically and pay you per click or per impression. Networks in Iran include:
- Yektanet
- Tapsell
- Mediaad
Click income on its own is rarely large, but once traffic is high it becomes a steady, low-maintenance stream. A site with 30 thousand daily views might take 5 to 15 million Toman a month from it.
4) Income from custom content and publisher work
Some businesses want a bespoke article, a special report, an interview or branded content run on your site. The model is close to the advertorial but goes deeper, and it usually carries a higher price.
5) Income from working with organizations and institutions
Credible outlets sign long-term contracts for news coverage, content publication and media collaboration with organizations, government bodies, large companies and institutes. That kind of income arrives by contract and is more stable.
6) Income from subscriptions or premium content
A few publications place part of their specialist or analytical coverage behind a paywall. The model is still not common in Iran, but it is growing.
The revenue models at a glance
| Revenue model | Approximate monthly income | Main prerequisite |
|---|---|---|
| Advertorials | 10 to 100+ million Toman | High traffic and strong domain authority |
| Banner advertising | 5 to 50+ million Toman | High traffic and good placements |
| Click-based ads | 3 to 20+ million Toman | High traffic |
| Custom content | 5 to 30+ million Toman | Reputation and a targeted audience |
| Institutional contracts | Variable, by contract | Media credibility |
In other words, a successful publication with good traffic can take tens of millions of Toman a month, and hundreds of millions at the upper levels. Reaching that point needs infrastructure, a team, content, SEO and time.
What should the build itself include?
A newsroom is not an ordinary website. Its structure, its behavior and its technical foundation all have to match heavy content volume, high traffic and the specific demands of publishing.
1) Fast load times
Publications carry a lot of pages and receive a lot of visitors. When speed drops, readers leave and the rankings take the damage with them. Speed work here is critical, not optional.
- Use a CDN
- Optimize images
- Aggressive caching
- An appropriate, powerful server
- Clean code with no unnecessary plugins
2) A professional category structure
The taxonomy has to be clear and genuinely useful. Sections such as:
- Political news
- Economic news
- Sports news
- Culture and society news
- Technology news
- Provincial and city news
- Special reports
- Interviews
That structure matters to readers, it matters to search engines, and it matters to advertisers who need to know where their content will land.
3) A fast, efficient CMS
The editorial desk has to write, edit and publish quickly. The content management system should:
- offer an editor that is fast and simple
- allow both instant and scheduled publishing
- support multiple writers and editors
- make uploading images and video quick
- come with proper tagging and labeling
4) Responsive, mobile-first design
The majority of a publication’s traffic arrives on phones. Optimize the layout for mobile first and only then for desktop.
5) Ad placements designed in from the start
Banner positions have to be part of the design from day one. The header, sidebar, in-feed and footer units should be ready visually and technically, not retrofitted later.
6) A dedicated advertorial section
Set aside a clear section for sponsored articles, one that:
- is visibly separate from ordinary news
- has stated rules for what gets published there
- has a transparent rate card and ordering page
7) Strong technical SEO
From the technical side the site must be fully search-ready:
- A clean URL structure
- A dynamic XML sitemap
- NewsArticle schema markup
- High speed
- Intelligent internal linking
- Breadcrumbs
- AMP, or at minimum a fast mobile version
8) A notification system
Push notifications tell readers about the stories that matter. The feature brings traffic back and lifts engagement at the same time.
9) Video and multimedia
Video gets more important every day. The site needs to present video, photo galleries and infographics properly rather than as an afterthought.
Is WordPress a good fit for a newsroom?
Yes. WordPress is one of the most widely used content management systems for news sites in Iran and worldwide, and a great many of the biggest publishing sites on the internet run on it.
What WordPress brings to a publication:
- Rapid setup
- Professional news themes
- Strong plugins for SEO, speed and security
- Multi-author management
- High flexibility
- A cost that stays reasonable
Important note: WordPress suits a newsroom as long as it sits on a strong server with an optimized theme, professional caching and competent technical management. On a cheap shared host, it does not work at all for a publication with heavy traffic.
How does a site rank in every city and province?
This is one of the most important parts of a publication’s SEO strategy. To be visible across all the cities and provinces of Iran you need a specific content and technical structure.
1) Open provincial and city news sections
The first and most important move is a separate section for every province and its major cities. For example:
- Tehran news
- Isfahan news
- West Azerbaijan news
- Urmia news
- Qom news
- Mashhad news
- Shiraz news
- Tabriz news
- Kurdistan province news
and each of those sections needs its own archive page, where everything relating to that area collects in one place.
2) Produce genuinely local content for each city
Creating the categories is not enough. You have to actually produce local content for each area — the real news of that city and province — rather than republishing one national story across ten city sections.
For example:
- News of a construction project opening in Qom
- A report on traffic conditions in Urmia
- Coverage of a cultural event in Isfahan
- Analysis of Tabriz’s economic situation
The more local and the more real that output is, the better your odds in that city’s local searches.
3) A sensible URL structure
Page addresses should be clean and search-friendly, like:
- example.com/ostan/azarbayjan-gharbi/
- example.com/shahr/urmia/
- example.com/shahr/qom/
This structure helps readers understand where they are, and it helps Google index each area’s content correctly. In the paths above, ostan is the Persian word for province and shahr the word for city.
4) Use geographic tags
Tag every story with the city and province it belongs to. Those tags serve both content filtering and search.
5) Provincial hub pages
Build one hub page for each province that:
- shows the latest news from that province
- links to the major cities inside it
- carries a short introduction to your coverage of the area
- displays the province’s most-read stories
Hub pages work like the main pillars of the site, and they are highly effective for ranking in searches tied to a province.
6) Intelligent internal linking
Every story about a city should link to that province’s hub page and to related coverage. That internal network helps Google understand the structure and distributes ranking power across the pages.
7) Google News and Discover
If the site meets the Google News standards, it can appear in the news carousel and in Google Discover. Either source can send very large traffic.
The core requirements for getting into Google News:
- Original, first-hand content
- A named author and a clear publication date
- A standard technical structure
- Continuous updating
- Compliance with Google’s content policies
8) Publishing speed
In news, how fast you publish matters a great deal. Break an important provincial story before your competitors do and both your ranking odds and your share of the first traffic wave rise sharply.
The team a publication needs
A newsroom with no active team does not grow. The minimum crew to start with:
- Editor or content manager: owns content strategy, quality control and team coordination
- Reporter or writer: at least 2 to 3 people for daily output
- Webmaster and SEO specialist: technical management of the site and optimization
- Advertising sales: selling advertorials and banners and bringing in advertisers
- Social media manager: publishing stories on social platforms and drawing traffic from them
In the early stage one person may cover several of these roles. For real growth, though, the team has to become more specialized over time.
The right server and hosting
Server choice matters far more here than for an ordinary site, because:
- the content volume is large
- traffic is high and uneven — a single story can go viral and multiply the load several times over
- load speed is critical
- uptime has to stay above 99.9 percent
My recommendation:
- Start on a VPS with adequate resources
- Move toward a dedicated server as traffic grows
- Use a CDN without exception
- Run server-side caching
- Automated daily backups are a necessity
Common mistakes when launching a news site
1) Copying stories from other outlets
The biggest mistake newcomers make is publishing other sites’ news word for word. That is harmful for SEO and it can get the whole site penalized by Google. Your content should be original, or at the very least rewritten with added value.
2) Optimizing for quantity over quality
Some sites publish 50 items a day and every one of them is shallow. Ten good, original stories a day beat 50 copied, worthless ones.
3) Ignoring SEO at the beginning
A lot of publications start producing content first and only later remember that search visibility matters. The SEO structure has to be taken seriously at the very moment the site is being designed.
4) A weak server
A newsroom on cheap shared hosting drops offline the moment traffic climbs. That means lost readers, lost credibility and lost revenue.
5) No revenue model from day one
Some people build the site with no idea how it will ever earn. The model should be decided up front: advertorials, banners, click-based ads, or a combination.
6) Neglecting design and user experience
A cluttered, disordered publication drives readers off. The layout should be clean, fast and easy to use.
7) No local reporter for the provinces
If you want to rank in every city but only republish national stories, you will not get good results. Every target area needs a reporter or at least a local news source.
The steps to launch a professional publication
Step 1: Planning and strategy
- Set the editorial scope: general, specialized, provincial or national
- Set the revenue model
- Identify the competitors
- Design the category and province structure
- Write the content production plan
Step 2: Domain and branding
- Choose a suitable, memorable name
- Register the domain, either .ir (Iran’s country extension) or .com
- Design the logo and visual identity
Step 3: Site design and development
- Pick the content management system
- Build a professional, custom theme
- Implement the SEO structure
- Set up the advertising placements
- Optimize speed
Step 4: Technical configuration
- Install and configure the server
- Configure the CDN and the cache
- Connect Search Console and Analytics
- Implement news schema markup
- Send the Google News application
Step 5: Start producing content
- Publish news every day
- Cover provincial stories
- Produce reports and analysis
- Distribute on social media
Step 6: Win advertisers and start earning
- Build the advertising rate card page
- Contact businesses to sell advertorials and banners
- Join the ad networks
- Show advertisers your traffic figures
How long until a newsroom earns?
This question matters, and I want to answer it realistically.
- First 3 months: building the infrastructure, starting production, getting pages indexed. Income is close to zero or very small
- 3 to 6 months: slow traffic growth, first visibility in Google, the earliest advertorials and small earnings
- 6 to 12 months: solid traffic growth, more requests for advertorials and advertising, a meaningful monthly income
- 1 to 2 years: a settled position, stable and predictable income, room to expand the team and the structure
That schedule belongs to a site designed and managed properly from the start. Begin without a strategy and you may still have nothing serious after 2 years.
Final news website design checklist
- Are the goal and the revenue model clearly defined?
- Has a professional category structure been designed?
- Do you have provincial and city news sections?
- Has a suitable server and host been chosen?
- Is the site optimized for speed?
- Does the mobile version work excellently?
- Were the ad placements designed in from the start?
- Was the SEO structure implemented from the beginning?
- Is news schema markup implemented?
- Is the content team ready to go?
- Do you have an advertising rate card page?
- Do you have a notification system?
- Do you have a daily content production plan?
- Are Search Console and Analytics connected?
- Has the Google News application been submitted?
Wrap-up
A newsroom is one of the highest-earning and at the same time most demanding online business models there is. Designed correctly, built on an SEO structure from the first day, backed by an active content team and driven by a clear revenue plan across advertorials, banner space and click-based ads, it can turn into a real and lasting business.
Here is the key point: a news site without a strategy is just a noisy blog. With the right strategy it becomes a publication that earns.
